Neverness to Everness (NTE) and Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) are both urban-themed action RPGs, but they differ fundamentally in design philosophy, exploration model, and gacha mechanics. This article provides a comprehensive comparison across multiple dimensions.
Combat System
ZZZ's combat centers on chain attacks and attribute anomalies. Players control a squad in high-speed action combat, building up daze through attribute disorders (Shock, Freeze, Burn, etc.) to trigger spectacular chain attacks. The combat rhythm is snappy, character swaps are fluid, and the impact feel is excellent.
NTE's combat revolves around the Esper ability system. Each character has unique Esper combat styles emphasizing combo chains and parry mechanics. The pacing is equally fast but focuses more on individual skill expression and the differentiated design of Esper abilities. Successfully landing parries triggers satisfying counter-attacks that reward hardcore action players.
Overall, ZZZ's combat leans toward team synergy and attribute strategy, while NTE emphasizes individual mechanical skill ceiling and character-specific playstyles.
World & Exploration
This is one of the biggest differences between the two games.
ZZZ is set in New Eridu, a city plagued by the Hollow crisis. Players enter Hollows through the HDD system. The game uses an instance-based design where players explore on a TV-channel grid map, switching to 3D combat scenes when encountering enemies. This TV exploration + combat hybrid is ZZZ's signature gameplay loop.
NTE builds a true open-world urban environment — Hethereau. Players seamlessly explore this modern city filled with supernatural phenomena with no loading screens or instance boundaries. You can freely walk the streets, drive vehicles across the city, and enter various buildings. Anomaly dungeons and world events are scattered throughout the city waiting to be discovered.
In short: ZZZ offers instance-based urban exploration, while NTE provides open-world urban exploration. If you prefer higher exploration freedom, NTE is the better fit. If you enjoy carefully paced level design, ZZZ delivers a tighter experience.
Gacha Differences (Key Differentiator)
This is NTE's most significant player-friendly advantage over ZZZ.
No 50/50 System
NTE has confirmed via its official livestream that there is NO 50/50 mechanic on the limited banner. When you pull an S-rank character on the limited banner, it is 100% guaranteed to be the featured character. At most 90 pulls guarantees your desired character.
ZZZ uses the traditional 50/50 mechanic: when you pull an S-rank for the first time, there is a 50% chance you get a standard banner character instead. If you lose the 50/50, you need up to 180 pulls (hard pity) to guarantee the featured character. This means for the same featured character, NTE requires at most 90 pulls while ZZZ may require up to 180 — literally double the cost.
Beginner Benefits Comparison
NTE offers a beginner-exclusive banner with 20-pull pity guaranteeing an S-rank character that you can SELECT. The standard banner grants an S-rank selector ticket at 50 cumulative pulls. The City Tycoon game mode gives a free S-rank character (Xiaozhi). Launch rewards total approximately 418 free pulls.
ZZZ's beginner banner offers a 20% discount on 20 pulls but has no selector mechanic. Launch rewards totaled roughly 300 pulls, and all limited banners carry 50/50 risk.
Bottom Line
When it comes to the gacha system, NTE is significantly more F2P-friendly. No 50/50 means every pull holds more value, and the more generous beginner benefits make NTE one of the most generous urban action RPGs on the market for free-to-play players.
Graphics & Art Style
ZZZ features stylized cel-shaded rendering with a strong, distinctive art direction. Character designs lean toward trendy, stylized anime with bold colors and high visual impact. The overall aesthetic is cohesive and polished, with relatively modest hardware requirements.
NTE uses Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) for realistic rendering. The city's lighting effects, material details, and atmospheric rendering are highly refined, pursuing a more authentic visual experience. This also means NTE has higher hardware requirements, especially on PC.
The two games have completely different art directions: ZZZ is stylized trendy aesthetics, while NTE is realistic urban texture. Both are excellent in their own right — it comes down to personal preference.
Platform Support
Both NTE and ZZZ support PC, mobile, and PS5 platforms. However, ZZZ has been live longer and has mature optimization across all platforms. NTE, as a newer game, still needs to prove its mobile optimization at launch.
Unique Features
NTE: Vehicle Driving & Housing
NTE offers a vehicle system rarely seen in similar games. Players can drive various vehicles freely through the city, greatly improving exploration efficiency. Additionally, NTE features a home purchasing and interior decoration system where players can customize their living space — a very unique experience in the action RPG genre.
ZZZ: TV Exploration & Chain Attacks
ZZZ's core feature is the TV channel exploration system. Players navigate grid-based maps with TV remote-like controls, triggering events, collecting resources, and entering combat. The chain attack system in combat is also a highlight, with flashy and fluid character swap animations.
Content Types
As an open-world game, NTE offers more diverse content types: main story quests, side commissions, Anomaly dungeons, City Tycoon, vehicle challenges, housing decoration, world events, and more. Exploration freedom is high, and players can experience content at their own pace.
ZZZ's content is organized into instances: main story chapters, Hollow Zero (roguelike), Shiyu Defense (abyss), daily commissions, and limited-time events. Content density is high with each segment carefully designed, but freedom is relatively constrained.
Music & Collaborations
ZZZ's music blends electronic, rock, and urban pop styles that perfectly complement its trendy aesthetics. ZZZ has also had multiple brand collaborations and pop-up events, with mature IP management.
NTE's music is expected to lean toward urban atmosphere and electronic styles. As a new game, collaboration events are still being planned, but Perfect World's extensive IP management experience in the Chinese market bodes well for the future.
Monetization Summary
Both games use a free-to-play + gacha monetization model. From the player's perspective:
NTE: No 50/50, 90-pull pity guarantees the featured character, beginner banner selector, standard banner selector, ~418 free pulls at launch, free S-rank character.
ZZZ: Has 50/50, hard pity at 180 pulls, beginner banner discount, ~300 free pulls at launch, no free S-rank character.
On gacha generosity, NTE comprehensively outperforms ZZZ.
Final Verdict: Which Should You Choose?
If you enjoy: open-world free exploration, driving vehicles, buying and decorating homes, realistic graphics, and no 50/50 gacha — choose NTE.
If you prefer: instance-based tightly designed experiences, TV grid exploration, stylized art, and polished chain-attack combat — choose ZZZ.
Of course, both games are free to play, so you can easily enjoy both. Use NTE to satisfy your open-world exploration cravings and ZZZ for refined instance-based combat sessions.
