Overall: 8.5/10

Graphics — 8.5/10

UE5-powered city with ceiling-level lighting. RTX 5090: ~90-100 FPS at 4K. Weakness: Poor mobile optimization.

Combat — 8.5/10

Parry mechanics, deep elemental reactions, meaningful team building. Faster pacing than Genshin.

Rare urban open world, 100+ anime easter eggs, City Tycoon. Map smaller than competitors.

Gacha — 9.5/10

No 50/50, 90-pull guaranteed featured, 470+ free pulls, free maxed S-rank from City Tycoon.

Reception

Verdict

Sincere urban RPG. Highly recommended, especially for F2P players.

NTE Deep Review — 8.5/10: Genuine Effort with Notable Flaws

What Makes NTE Special

Open World Design (9/10)

NTE's Hethereau city is one of the most impressive urban open worlds in any gacha game. The density of interactable elements, the verticality of exploration, and the seamless integration of driving/walking create a genuinely novel experience. The cyberpunk-meets-anime aesthetic is distinctive and cohesive.

Combat System (8/10)

The Esper Cycle reaction system adds meaningful depth to team building. The absence of a 50/50 system in gacha is genuinely player-friendly. Time stop mechanics (Xun/Hotori) add a unique strategic layer. However, some reactions feel undertuned compared to others.

Gacha System (9/10)

  • No 50/50 system — guaranteed featured character
  • 90-pull hard pity (avg ~53 pulls)
  • Pity carries over between banners
  • 80-pull weapon pity
  • This is one of the most generous gacha systems in the genre

Content Volume (7/10)

Launch content is substantial but consumable. Main story takes ~40 hours, but after completion there's a content drought. City Tycoon and housing help, but hardcore players may feel there's not enough endgame.

Notable Flaws

AI Art Controversy (Major)

The biggest issue facing NTE. AI-generated billboard art that resembled Makoto Shinkai's works caused massive backlash. The developer's initial response was slow, and the controversy alienated some creators and voice actors. They have since committed to reworking the flagged assets.

Technical Issues (Moderate)

  • Mobile optimization is poor — TapTap score dropped to 6.1 at launch
  • Multiple hotfixes needed in the first week
  • Some crash-prone story missions
  • Loading times on older devices

Tower of Fantasy Shadow (Moderate)

Hotta Studio's history with ToF makes many players cautious. The CN community is actively comparing NTE's trajectory to ToF's, and any signs of content decline will trigger mass departures.

Bottom Line

NTE is a genuinely good game with the best gacha system in the genre and a stunning open world. The AI controversy is a real blemish, and Hotta needs to earn back trust. If they maintain content quality, this could be a top-tier gacha for years to come.

Score: 8.5/10 — Recommended with reservations.
